In security cameras, outdoor cabinets, charging piles and public devices, ordinary screws can be opened by anyone with a bit, risking tampering. Pin-torx screws add a center post so unauthorized people can't disassemble—an anti-tamper solution widely used outdoors and in public gear. This article covers structure, applications and selection.
Pin-torx adds a cylindrical post in the center of the star recess. A normal solid torx bit hits the post and cannot seat, so it can't turn. The matching hollow bit clears the post and engages the lobes. Only holders of the dedicated bit can service the screw, while casual tools fail.
The added cost is small yet stops most opportunistic tampering. It is not high-security (special tools can still defeat it) but prevents everyday vandalism and modification.
Popular sizes T10-T40 correspond to M3-M8 threads. Outdoor gear uses 304/316 stainless; indoor cabinets use zinc-plated carbon. Head styles include pan, countersunk and flange by clearance. Higher strength uses alloy steel zinc or dacromet.
Security camera housings, access control and intercom terminals prevent tampering; charging piles and storage cabinets reduce electrical liability from unauthorized opening; light-control boxes, shared devices, vending machines and lockers use them; telecom cabinets prevent unauthorized hookup.
Confirm the drive size (T#) and thread, and buy matching hollow bits—otherwise on-site installation or service is impossible. Pin screws are less ideal for frequent disassembly because aligning the center post takes care. Trial-fit before batch use.
